A Brief Movie Poster History.

Motion pictures are one of the most popular art forms of the twentieth century. Movie posters were produced to promote films and were treated as ephemera to be tossed out once a fresh picture hit the marquee. Since they were not really collected until the 1970's, posters are extremely rare and just a very few copies of many of the older ones have survived. Movie posters are now prized as combinations of fine art and popular culture. Toulouse-Lautrec and Thomas Hart Benton are just two of the acclaimed artists who designed movie posters.

International posters have long been prized world-wide. Museums in Europe and Asia have long held posters as part of their collections. There are several museums in Poland devoted solely to posters which is fueled by the strength of the Polish poster design. The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. has a number of movie posters in their collection as well.

Today, movie posters are a hot commodity. Posters are being auctioned regularly world-wide by major auction houses such as Christies and Sotheby's among others. Record prices are being set frequently as evidenced by the recent sale (March 1, 1997) of a poster for the original 1932 THE MUMMY which sold for over $450,000! Interest continues to build as more new collectors are introduced to the enjoyment and potential profitability of collecting movie memorabilia. Visit our Store
